I am thinking about repeling over a cliff into a cave in Belize. What questions should one ask to feel good the equipment is proper and safe for my familiy. We will drop in and hike out. Seems the ropes are tied to trees, is this good? They use a rope in the front and back to provent you flipping over. What would be a danger signal not to trust them?
First of all, a properly set up rapelling/rock climbing route is safer than driving in your car. That being said, here are some things about safety. You want at least two anchors, three is better. By anchors I mean the trees that the ropes are tied to; you want the setup so that if one anchor fails, another one will hold. Trees, by the way, are good anchors. Look over the equipment visually; if it looks frayed it is probably not in the best condition. Ask how old the rope is; climbing ropes should be replaced every 5 years or so. If you go to a climbing wall, you could get a feel for what the proper setup is like. I would use your instincts; if you feel that the people are not competent, don’t do it.
